Jane Holland (MB, BCh, BAO, MA, MSc, PgDipEd, MD, PhD, MRCSI) is a graduate in Medicine from Trinity College, Dublin. After her surgical & medical internships, she was Demonstrator in Anatomy in Trinity College, Dublin, obtaining her MSc. by thesis during this year. Following this, she was employed as a Surgical SHO in the Cork Federated Hospitals and subsequently joined the Dublin Surgical Training Scheme, becoming an Associate Fellow (and then Member) of the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland. She thereafter became a Research Fellow in Trinity College, working with the Professorial Surgical unit at St James Hospital, under the supervision of Professor Reynolds; her MD thesis investigated the role of the systemic and splanchnic immune systems in the development of multiple organ dysfunction syndrome (MODS). Dr Holland next spent two years working as a Registrar in General Surgery, before returning to the Anatomy Department in Trinity College, Dublin. In 2005, she was appointed Lecturer in Anatomy in the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland, and promoted to Senior Lecturer in 2016. Following completion of two biosciences research Doctorates (MD, PhD), Dr Holland is now involved in Medical Education scholarship and research, and provides a number of in-house workshops regarding multiple aspects of education and assessment. Her ongoing research projects explore aspects of education such as anatomical teaching, technology enhanced learning and assessment. She has twice received the RCSI President's Teaching Award (2011 & 2015), was also nominated by the College for a NAIRTL National Award for Excellence in Teaching in 2012, and is a member of the Education Committee of the Anatomical Society. In addition to undergraduate teaching, Dr Holland also contributes to multiple postgraduate programs within RCSI such as the Operative Surgical Skills and Medical Sciences Courses, and is an Examiner for the IMRCS/MRCSI (Surgical Membership Examinations).
